Abstract There are numerous numerical models and observationally based data sets. Many use different grid types with various resolutions. To quantitatively compare the results from one model or data set with another, the data must be defined on the same grid. Considering the variety of the grids, this is not a trivial task. As an example, the next IPCC assessment (AR5) is rapidly approaching and different research groups are collaborating around the world to analyze the results of different climate models and data sets. Hence, it is crucial to be able to easily and efficiently interpolate data from one grid to another. To address these requirements a suite of functions and command line operators have been developed to facilitate grid interpolation (remapping, regridding) within the NCAR Command Language (NCL). A software package from the "Earth System Modeling Framework" (ESMF) is used as the foundation to create interpolation weights. These weights can be generated once and applied many times; thus, improving the performance of the interpolation. The currently available methods are (1) bilinear, (2) conservative, and (3) patch. A variety of functions have been developed within NCL to facilitate the weight generation and interpolation among grid structures.
