Abstract High performance scientific codes require speed, efficiency, and accuracy. Parallel debugging helps to preserve these qualities in large-scale codes, but has challenges due in part to the size and complexity of large scientific codes. Also, parallel debuggers are large and often complex utilities to use. Knowing how to use a parallel debugger and which aspect of the debugging tool will best identify a software bug saves time and other resources. Our work consists of evaluating several top-of-the-line parallel debuggers based on their effectiveness in locating synthetically generated software bugs.
