Where Science Meets Humanities: A Program Evaluation Proposal for SIParCS
Since 2007 the Summer Internships in Parallel Computational Science (SIParCS) program under the Computational and Informations System Lab (CISL) at NSF NCAR has prioritized making a positive, long term impact on the workforce of High Performance Computing (HPC) related areas by providing quality and development to student-interns. An evaluation of the program will allow the administration to understand all the components the program requires to function effectively and the benefits primary stakeholders (i.e., student interns and NCAR/UCAR staff) experience before, during, and after participation in SIParCS. The following presentation is a program evaluation proposal designed to first provide a program overview which highlights how SIParCS has incorporated student development theories of mentorship to foster horizontal growth and professional development during transition periods from academic to career oriented environments. Additionally, a detailed logic model will visually identify the components that promote the overall goal of SIParCS. Finally, using a mixed-methodologies approach for future data collection, this presentation will outline a few implications that should be explored and measured for future improvement.
