There are a wide variety of temporary disks on the various SCD machines. Temporary disks are handy when you have a short-term need for more disk space than is available in your home directory.

This table summarizes which temporary disks are available on each machine, whether there are quotas, and whether there are scrubbers. Following the table are some important usage hints.

Scrubber

  • 1 No scrubber, but $TMPDIR is completely removed when the batch job ends.
  • 2 No scrubber, but $TMPDIR is completely removed when you log off.
  • 3 Please use /scratch on sioux. It is much larger and is preferred over both /tmp and /usr/tmp.

Usage hints

  • Quotas limit your total file size and also your number of files. You can determine your quota with the command quota -v.

On Cray computers, you can also use crayinfo -quota, and on SGI computers you can use sgiinfo -quota.

  • The scrubber removes big and old files if disk space is running low.

  • $TMPDIR are temporary directories created automatically on some systems. They are unique for each batch job and for each interactive login session.

  • Temporary disk space is NOT backed up at all.
