A large crowd of well-wishers turned out when Dick Sato retired recently after a 26-year career at NCAR.

Dick came to NCAR in 1971, and began working with one of NCAR's earliest supercomputers, the CDC 7600. He was manager of SCD User Services from 1982 to 1985.

Dick was one of NCAR's chief benchmarking experts, and served as assistant manager of the SCD Computational Support Section beginning in 1989 and as manager from 1993 to 1995.

He developed and modified codes for testing the performance of numerous supercomputing platforms, including Crays and the Connection Machine. Notably, he collaborated with Paul Swarztrauber in the development of a primitive climate code that was used widely by the scientific community to benchmark the emerging parallel high-performance computers.

Dick was lead programmer in charge of program development of the NCAR Community Climate Model, working closely with NCAR scientists David Williamson and James Hack. He was responsible for the CHAMMP (Computer Hardware, Advanced Mathematics, and Model Physics Project) Model Development Team at NCAR. He is the author of numerous publications.

Dick is also well known for his skill at golf, and has often brought home the honors at the annual NCAR golf tournament. His friends and colleagues wish Dick the best of luck and the time to enjoy a few rounds on the links!
