SCD has scheduled a new version of NCAR Graphics software, Version 4.1, for release late this summer. Version 4.1 offers an increase in data manipulation and visualization capabilities, making it easier to create high-quality scientific visualizations.
New features in the NCAR Graphics 4.1 package include:
- An enhanced version of the NCAR Command Language, NCL (a data analysis language)
- Upgrades to the Fortran graphics utilities
- Direct access to multiple data formats, including netCDF, HDF, GRIB, NCAR Community Climate Model (CCM), ASCII, IEEE binary, and Cray binary
The new look of NCL
NCL, an interpreted command language, has been enhanced in Version 4.1. The new NCL offers a set of applications with which you can compute statistics and correlations, do regridding and interpolations, and perform spherical harmonic transformations.
NCL upgrades include:
- More than 70 new functions and procedures
- New mathematical functions
- Command-line editing
- Dynamic linking of C and Fortran objects files
- Wind barbs in vector plots
The classic look of Fortran utilities
NCAR Graphics 4.1 software also features upgrades to the Fortran graphics utilities, including:
- Updates to the Ezmap package
- Tdpack, a new package for drawing 3-D objects (including lines, polygons, surfaces, and isosurfaces)
- A new math library, Ngmath, which incorporates:
Version 4.1 will be the last release of the NCAR Graphics Fortran utilities for some time. These utilities will continue to exist in the NCAR Graphics package, but will not be included in the first release of the new NCAR DataVision package, coming in FY99.
Special incentives
SCD is offering these special incentives to users:
- If you license NCAR Graphics 4.0 software now, you will receive an automatic upgrade to Version 4.1.
- If you already hold a license for NCAR Graphics 4.0 software, you can license Version 4.1 at a substantial discount. All site reps and site installers should look for the Limited-time Discount Renewal Form in the near future.
- All NCAR Graphics 4.1 license holders will automatically receive NCAR DataVision software when it is released (expected in FY99).
