How to get a GAU

The SCD Advisory Panel approved the following changes to SCD computer allocation procedures at their meeting on 30 April 1998. No more hardcopySCD will no longer accept hardcopy applications; you must submit all computing requests electronically. Please see "Applying for Computing Resources at NCAR": Grads and postdocsIf you are a graduate student or unsponsored postdoc, you can apply for a "one time only" seed grant of 100 General Accounting Units (GAUs). (This is an increase from the previous 50 GAUs permitted.) You will need a support letter from your advisor or department chair to confirm that funds are not available to pay for the time required. Small requestsSCD defines "small" computing requests as requests for 250 GAUs or less. The review process has changed, however; SCD will now give small requests an internal review, and, if necessary, solicit opinions from experts in the field. SCD will handle your small request expeditiously if you provide sufficient information in the proposal summary of the electronic request form. Otherwise, SCD will delay approval until you provide additional information. Large requestsSCD defines "large" computing requests as requests for more than 250 GAUs; these requests require review by the SCD Advisory Panel. The panel meets twice a year, in the spring and fall. If you have a large request, you can receive an advance of up to 250 GAUs prior to the panel meetings to avoid time delay. You must adequately document your request for panel review with the equivalent of at least three to five single-spaced typewritten pages (the panel was concerned with the brevity of recent applications). Your electronic application should be in final form six weeks before a panel meeting. Fall deadlineThe next SCD Advisory Panel meeting will take place at NCAR on 22-23 October 1998. The deadline for submitting electronic requests is 10 September 1998. |
