SCD

by Bill Buzbee

As some of you may recall, I joined NCAR as director of SCD in April 1987. The ensuing 11 years have been the high-water mark of my career. Thanks to the help of many people throughout NCAR, UCAR, the National Science Foundation, and especially SCD, this past decade has been one of steady accomplishment for SCD.

However, 11 years is a long time, and about two years ago, I began making plans to retire in 1998 (even if we had obtained the NEC SX-4!).

So, I am pleased to announce that my tenure as SCD director will end no later than 28 September 1998. My last day as a regular employee will be 31 December 1998. In 1999 and 2000, NCAR has graciously accorded me emeritus status as a senior research associate. Also, I will maintain an office in SCD at least through 1999.

Let me emphasize that this action is being taken at my initiative under NCAR's early retirement policy.

1998 is an opportune time to bring a new director into SCD. The SX-4 procurement is behind us, we are well along with the transition to highly parallel systems, and the FY99 budget looks promising. Please be thinking about qualified candidates and urge them to apply.

It has been a tremendous pleasure and honor working with you.
