Effective 1 October 1998, NCAR Mass Storage System (MSS) virtual volumes are no longer supported for determining physical placement of data. Support of the virtual volume parameter (-v on the mswrite command) continues for the sole purpose of establishing the default retention period (if not overridden with the -t mswrite option).

Also as of 1 October, all NCAR MSS virtual volume storage charges are converted to "public" volume charges. Public volume charges are determined by the number of bytes actually stored, while virtual volumes charges are based on the number of physical cartridges used.

These changes do not require any action by the MSS users. Charging for all data currently stored on virtual volumes are converted automatically to the public volume method. Although the msallinfo command may continue to report data residing on non-public volumes, over time all data on virtual volumes will migrate to public volumes. All new data written to the MSS will be stored on public volumes.
