SCD

by Brian Bevirt

In collaboration with Technical Consulting Group authors, Digital Information Group staff recently prepared user guides on the web that explain site-specific usage details of the Silicon Graphics Cray Origin2000 (ute), the HP Exemplar SPP2000 (sioux), and the Cray J924se (chipeta), the three newest high-performance computers at NCAR. DIG also publishes SCDzine, this electronic news and feature magazine for users.

DIG manages the SCD and NCAR websites, employing new web technology at a pace timed to match the hardware and software adoption of users at UCAR's consortium member universities. For instance, while many important web-publishing improvements are available in HTML 4.0, DIG will not convert the SCD and NCAR websites to this new level until almost all our users can access it properly with their browsers.

In 1998, DIG replaced NCAR's original search engine with a more advanced freeware search engine that allows users to locate specific information on most NCAR and UCAR web servers. This new search engine allows information providers to include keywords in HTML files so users will see keyword matches first in their list of hits. Providers can also limit the scope of user searches to avoid user overload from too many hits. For example, SCD's Data Support Section provides a limited-scope search so users can query just the DSS site or DSS datasets.

"Around-the-clock, quick and easy access to good information is critical to our user community, as well as to our organization's external collaborative partners," says TSD section manager Sally Haerer. "For many users, our documentation and web information is their first point of contact."
