SCD is proud to announce the release of NCAR Graphics software, version 4.1.
This new version offers an increase in data manipulation and
visualization capabilities, making it easier to create high-quality
scientific visualizations.
New features in the NCAR Graphics 4.1 package include:
- An enhanced version of the NCAR Command Language (NCL), a data
analysis language. NCL offers direct access to multiple data formats
such as netCDF, HDF, GRIB, NCAR Community Climate Model (CCM), ASCII,
IEEE binary, and Cray binary.
- A new math library
- Upgrades to the high-level utilities (HLUs)
- Upgrades to the Fortran graphics utilities
- New documentation
The new look of NCL
NCL has been enhanced in NCAR
Graphics software version 4.1. The new NCL offers a set of
applications with which you can compute statistics and correlations,
do regridding and interpolations, and perform spherical harmonic
transformations.
NCL upgrades include:
A new math library
NCL also includes a new math library called Ngmath, a collection of mathematical procedures for which
there are equivalent Fortran, C, and NCL entries. The Ngmath library
contains a collection of interpolators for one-dimensional,
two-dimensional, and three-dimensional data. The packages are:
-
Fitgrid, a package for interpolating 1- and 2-D gridded data
-
Natgrid, a package for interpolating 2-D random data
-
Dsgrid, a package for interpolating 3-D random data
More information about Ngmath is available in the article "SCD
unveils new mathematical library, Ngmath" in the Spring
1998 issue of SCDzine.
Enhancements to the high-level utilities
The high-level utilities have many enhancements, including new resources. Some of the more important enhancements
are:
The classic look of Fortran utilities
NCAR Graphics 4.1 software also features upgrades to the Fortran
graphics utilities, including:
Version 4.1 will be the last release of the NCAR Graphics Fortran
utilities for some time. These utilities will continue to exist in the
NCAR Graphics package, but will not be included in the first release
of the new NCAR DataVision
package, coming in FY99.
New documentation
In addition to documentation of the new features and upgrades listed
above, there's a new document available called "Getting started
using NCL" (GSUN). GSUN gives a practical
introduction to NCL and is aimed at users with little or no
experience with NCL. More advanced users may find it useful as well.
The heart of GSUN is the "Learning
NCL by example" chapter, which introduces some NCL plotting
functions and procedures that provide a basic interface to NCL's
plotting capabilities.
Special incentives
SCD is offering these special incentives to users:
- If you already hold a license for NCAR Graphics version
4.0.x software, you can license NCAR Graphics version 4.1
software at a substantial discount until 28 February 1999. All site representatives and
site installers should have received a Limited-time Discount Renewal
Form in the mail by now.
- All NCAR Graphics 4.1 license holders will automatically receive
NCAR DataVision software when it is released (expected in FY99).
