S ince the June decommissioning of shavano, the CRAY Y-MP, SCD has noted an unusually heavy workload on ouray, the CRAY J90se, as well as a 70% increase in the total consulting traffic resulting from the high volume of Fortran 90 conversion questions.

SCD would like to remind users that paiute, the second J9, is also available for use, and that this machine still has a Fortran 77 (CF77) compiler in addition to the Fortran 90 compiler. Paiute has 16 CPUs and 256 megawords of central memory. As with ouray, paiute has no Solid-state Storage Device (SSD).

Paiute has been rather lightly loaded recently and may provide quicker turnaround with performance and charging than ouray. All ex-shavano users have accounts on both of these J90's.

Users having difficulty with the Fortran 90 conversion may wish to consider running jobs on paiute using the Fortran 77 compiler during their conversion effort to minimize the impact of the change on their productivity.

However, SCD advises users to continue converting their codes for use with the Fortran 90 compiler, since SCD cannot guarantee the long-term availability of the CF77 compiler on any machine.

Paiute is running under the new GAU calculation as updated in August (see "How now, new gau" in this issue). Thus, users are encouraged to run their computing in the regular queue (-q reg) on paiute.
