If you'd like to keep up with advances in computational technology but are short on time, you might like to attend an SCD seminar at Mesa or Foothills Lab.Since late 1995, SCD has offered a series of one- to three-hour seminars on technical topics related to high-performance computing and networking. The seminars are open to all NCAR users and UCAR employees at no charge.
An August 1996 seminar focused on SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) technology. SCD network engineer Chris Fair (right) presented a brief introduction to SONET concepts, terms, architecture, and operation.
Watch the Daily Bulletin for announcements of upcoming seminars.
Other seminars have included:
Other topics have included a new product update from Silicon Graphics, an introduction to Sun's Java, and beginning classes in HTML and Netscape.
- Parallel Software Engineering Tools: Focusing on issues such as parallel code quality, developer productivity, and end user ease of use
- Fiber Channel for Networking: Presenting a relatively new high-speed, switched-channel technology that may have networking applications
- vBNS and Application Procedures: Discussing the history, infrastructure, and architecture of the very-high-speed Backbone Network Service (vBNS), a gigabit testbed to support the high-performance user community at NCAR and the other supercomputing centers
- Interactive Data Browsing using NCAR Graphics: Describing interactive data browsing of GRIB, netCDF, and other formats
- Computer Security, Threats, and Defenses: A look at the implications of computer security (and lack thereof) from the user point of view.
- CO-OP 3D Demo: A live demo of high-speed data communication links between NCAR and the Ohio Supercomputer Center using a satellite to create a coupled modeling system
