SCD has taken delivery of a Cray J90se for the General User Community. With 20 processors and 1 GW of memory, this new J-series computer, named ouray, will provide the large memory required by many models. There will be no charging for the use of this machine by the General User Community through February. Users with shavano accounts will have accounts on ouray with the same password. Users of Fortran 77 will need to convert to Fortran 90, since Fortran 77 will not be available on ouray. Watch the daily bulletin for availability dates and more information about ouray. |

In the March timeframe, SCD will make available a new robotic storage device from StorageTek that can handle up to 300 terabytes when fully populated. The system will use helical-scan technology to read and write tapes, with each tape holding up to 50 billion bytes of data. With the addition of this storage device to NCAR's Mass Storage System, users will be able to read and write files of up to 6 billion bytes. This will not require any change to user procedures. |
Editor's note: More information about this new equipment appears in the hardcopy publication UCAR Quarterly. You can browse a hypertext version of that article at http://www.scd.ucar.edu/zine/96/fall/ucar.quarterly/.
