New
Mass Storage System (MSS) metadata commands became the default commands in
November 1996, on the SCD Cray computers (ouray, shavano, antero, paiute,
st-elmo, aztec, and echo) and meeker. These metadata commands manipulate
information such as MSS retention periods, passwords, ownership, access
times, filenames, accounting information, and comments. You can change
your shell search path to use the new commands. Details are available at
http://www.scd.ucar.edu/dcs/beta.metadata.html.
If you have not yet converted, consider:
- The SCD consultants are ready to help you make the transition.
- The MSS user document
"Introduction
to NCAR's Mass Storage System" has been updated to describe the
new commands. It's also available as a PostScript file (with page numbers
and a table of contents) for printing at your site. The PostScript version
is at
ftp://ftp.ucar.edu/docs/mss/mass_store_intro.ps
- There's a new "MSS Command Migration Guide" with lots of
command conversion charts at
http://www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/mss/migrate/migrate-1.html.
It's also available as a PostScript file (with page numbers
and a table of contents) for printing at your site. The
PostScript version is at
ftp://ftp.ucar.edu/docs/mss/migrate.ps
- The data movement commands (msread, mswrite, msimport, and
msexport) have not yet changed.
- The previous MSS commands are still available
in /usr/local/masnet.
- The new MSS commands do not apply to MIGS/IRJE users who
submit commands directly to MSS (as opposed to MSS
commands in Cray jobs).
- And finally, the Distributed Computing Services project (DCS) has a
website that offers an
introduction
to the MSS metadata commands and a
FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions list) that devotes half its space to MSS metadata questions.
Watch the Daily Bulletin for an announcement of additional documentation and any
changes to this information.
