The SCD Advisory Panel and their responsibilities

Large requests are reviewed by the SCD Advisory Panel after preliminary review by several experts.  All Panel-sized requests for students should be submitted jointly in the name of the major advisor or principle investigator and the student.

The Panel meets twice a year, in the spring and fall.  The members are selected on the basis of established competence in atmospheric science, oceanography, computer science, and other related fields.  They are appointed for three-year terms by the Director of the SCD.

The primary responsibilities of the SCD Advisory Panel are:

  • To assess the merit of proposals for the use of the SCD and to recommend action with respect to a prospective user's request on the basis of scientific merit, computational effectiveness and need;
  • To consult with and advise the Director of the SCD on matters of scientific and technical policy and procedure; and
  • To review the current status and future plans for the SCD as reported from time to time by the Director of the SCD; to make appropriate recommendations, critical reviews, future requirements estimates concerning SCD operations, and to recommend an appropriate allocation of time to users.

Applications to be reviewed by the SCD Advisory Panel should reach the SCD by the published deadline.

If work needs to begin immediately and the proposal meets support requirements, a modest advance of computational resources can be made after submission of the on-line request.
