SCD News > Announcement: January 10, 2005
After five years of service to the UCAR community, blackforest (including dave) and babyblue were decommissioned on 10 January 2005. At that time, the systems administration staff stopped all user processes and took the machine into maintenance mode. They began archiving the contents of blackforest's home directories.
Users will need to submit a request to the SCD Consulting Office to obtain their archived home directories. As advertised, blackforest's /ptmp directory can't be archived.
SCD anticipates being able to move lightning, a 256-processor Linux cluster, into production in February. We hope that lightning will handle about 60% of blackforest's capacity; however, usage of lightning may be limited to users with codes that run well on its architecture. Charging on lightning will be implemented on 1 February 2005.
