Chinook and chinookfe decomissioned

As of 30 August 2004

Chinook

Chinook, the SGI Origin3800

Chinook, an SGI Origin3800 supported by SCD, was decommissioned as a batch compute server at NCAR on 30 August 2004. Chinookfe, chinook's front end computer, was also decomissioned.

Chinook was purchased as a computer for NCAR's Climate Simulation Laboratory (CSL); however it is not a large compute server by today's standards. Thus, it was not included in the most recent CSL Announcement of Opportunity for computing resources.

SCD is investigating other compute servers that have better price performance. See

Please contact the SCD Consulting Office (consult1@ucar.edu or 303-497-1278) if you have questions or concerns, or for assistance on porting your code to another SCD compute server. Home directories on chinookfe will be archived on the MSS for about six months after the decommissioning.

Chinook and chinookfe were used by the CSL community from 2002–2004. For more information, see the chinook page in SCD's Supercomputer Gallery.
