SCD supercomputers being returned to production

One-time password authentication now required

SCD is developing plans for getting its supercomputing users back to productive work over the next few weeks. We are currently bringing the supercomputers back online with the implementation of a one-time password method for authentication. Because we are testing the new hardware and software to make sure it can handle the heavy loads that will be placed on it, we are allowing only small groups of users on bluesky or blackforest this week.

The new authentication system requires an electronic device you will need each time you access SCD supercomputers. It is called a CRYPTOCard, and provides a one-time password each time you access a supercomputer. The use of one-time passwords means that even if your password is "sniffed" or compromised, it doesn't impact the security of the supercomputer, since that password can be used only once.

We will be sending CRYPTOCARDs to researchers who have recently accessed SCD's supercomputers. If you plan to use the systems, but not right away, we will wait to issue you a CRYPTOCard, since at this time SCD does not have sufficient CRYPTOCards to distribute to all users until sometime in May. We are contacting university project lead users and NCAR Divisions on the allocation of cards for their projects.

If you lose your CRYPTOCard or it is damaged, there will be a $67 replacement fee. You must return your card when you finish using the SCD computer systems.

If you have questions on this process, please contact Ginger Caldwell, Manager of User Support, cal@ucar.edu or 303-497-1229.
