Dr. Larry Winter, NCAR's new deputy director |
NCAR director Tim Killeen announced on 21 February 2003 the appointment of Dr. Larry Winter as new NCAR deputy director. Larry comes to NCAR from the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), where he is an applied mathematician with extensive experience in computational geoscience, and a member of LANL's Center for Nonlinear Studies. Larry earned his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Arizona, and was chief scientist in the Advanced Computing Division at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) before coming to LANL. He has also served as the science advisor to the governor of New Mexico. Larry will assume his new role at NCAR in mid-April. Tim acknowledged the invaluable service of Bob Gall, director of NCAR's Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division, who was interim deputy director of NCAR during the search process. Tim praised Bob for his enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions to NCAR. Bob will remain as interim deputy director until Larry's arrival. |
