SGI 3800 chinook and SGI chinookefe now ready for users

Went into production 25 July 2002

SGI Origin 3800, chinook

The new SGI Origin 3800, chinook

On 25 July 2002, a new SGI Origin 3800 system named chinook was made available for users. The new machine is binary compatible with ute, the Origin 2000 it replaces, and has the same number of processors but twice the clock speed, four times the memory, and more than double the disk capacity.

Chinook has 128 500-MHz R14000 processors, 65 gigabytes of distributed shared memory, and 580 gigabytes of disk space. It is fitted with a HiPPI connection to the Mass Storage System and gigabit Ethernet to NCAR networks.

Also included in the chinook complex is an 8-processor SGI Origin 2100 named chinookfe, which functions as a front end to chinook.

Getting an account

If you had an account on ute, your account has been transferred to chinook with your password intact. Chinook will be available to CSL users at least through 30 November 2002.

Others eligible for an account on chinook:

  • If you are an IBM SP user running one- to three-processor jobs, you may request an account on chinook to run these jobs.
  • If you are an active chipeta user running single or multiprocessor jobs and you need to migrate these jobs, you may request an account on chinook to run these jobs.

To request an account on chinook, send e-mail to dbs@ucar.edu or call SCD Database Services at 303-497-1225.
