New SGI Origin 3800, chinook, replacing ute

Will be available to users on 22 July 2002

SGI Origin 3800, chinook

The new SGI Origin 3800, chinook

On 15 July 2002, the SGI Origin 2000 (ute) was decommissioned. It is being replaced with a new SGI Origin 3800 system. The new machine, named chinook, is binary compatible with ute and has the same number of processors as ute, but with twice the clock speed, four times the memory and more than double the disk capacity.

Chinook will be available for users on 22 July 2002. Utefe will also be unavailable during this timeframe for relocation and a software upgrade, and will be renamed chinookfe. Current users of ute and utefe are being automatically moved to chinook and chinookfe.
