An NCAR Command Language (NCL) workshop will be held at the UCAR Corporate Technical Training Center (directions below) from 16-18 July 2002. Attendance is limited to 20 people.

NCAR offers this workshop periodically. Typically, the first two days include:

  • Introduction to the netCDF data model
  • NCL language basics
  • NCL File I/O
  • NCL data processing
  • Graphics using gsn and gsn_csm plot interfaces

The optional third day includes file handling using the netCDF operators (NCO) or the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) Component Model Processing Suite (CMPS). The third day is devoted to assisting students with special projects.

The workshop format consists of morning lectures and afternoon exercises.

Students are expected to have had some programming experience in a major interpreted (e.g.
IDL or MATLAB) or noninterpreted (e.g. Fortran or C) computer language.

Directions

The Corporate Technical Training Center is located in the UCAR Finance and Administration Building, 4840 Pearl East Circle, Boulder, Colorado. Attendees will need UCAR ID cards to gain access to the building.

Should you be interested?

NCL is a programming language designed specifically for the access, analysis, and visualization of data. NCL can be run in interactive mode, where each line is interpreted as it is entered at your workstation, or it can be run in batch mode as an interpreter of complete scripts. NCL is available for free in binary format for several UNIX systems.

If you or your graduate students use NCAR CCSM data and would like an option for your
data processing and visualization needs, it is highly recommend that you attend an NCL workshop. If you routinely deal with netCDF, GRIB, or HDF data, NCL may make your processing needs simpler.
