Help SCD quantify spam problem

UCAR employees asked to send unsolicited junk email to spam@ucar.edu

SPAM!

Fight spam!

SCD is asking UCAR employees and visitors to foward spam messages they receive through their local UCAR email account to spam@ucar.edu. In case anyone doesn't know, "spam" is a colloquial term for Unsolicited Bulk E-mail, or junk e-mail.

For the moment, SCD is simply counting the number of spams to guage the severity of the problem. The NCAR/UCAR Computer Security Advisory Committee is considering implementing mail blocks against misconfigured systems on the Internet that are frequently used by spammers. This would have to be approved by management before it could be implemented, but if we do it, the counts from the spam@ucar.edu alias could also be used to guage the effectiveness of any anti-spam measures that are put in place.

For more information on spam -- how they do it, why they do it, and what you can do about it -- please see:
