Beginning 1 July 2002, the General Accounting Unit (GAU) charge for computer use at NCAR will be revalued. In addition, new computer factors will be used to calculate GAUs for computing, and a new formula will be used to calculate GAUs for using the Mass Storage System.
GAU being revalued
The GAU is currently equal to one CRAY C90 CPU hour. The GAU will be revalued to equal 10 IBM SP (blackforest) CPU hours. Charges on other computers will be adjusted accordingly. The revalued GAU will provide 0.3 GAUs (30%) for each current GAU.
For NCAR projects, the new divisional and joint NCAR/university allocations will be in effect. GAUs allocated for specific projects will remain the same as before unless the division allocation representative contacts Database Services via email at dbs@ucar.edu or by calling 303-497-1225.
For university projects, allocations will be reduced proportionately, and they will be based on the amount of GAUs remaining in the account.
GAU calculations to change
Beginning 1 July 2002, GAUs will be calculated using new computer factors. In the new calculations, one GAU equals approximately 10 IBM SP CPU hours.
The GAU formula continues to be the same as before:
GAUs = CPU hours * computer factor * job class factor
The new computer factors are:
blackforest 0.1
ute 0.0525
chipeta 0.075
Job class factors will not change.
MSS GAU changes
Beginning 1 July 2002, the formula to calculate GAUs for using the Mass Storage System (MSS) will change. Details about the MSS charging formula are on the web at:
http://www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/mss/charges.html
You have the option to reduce mass storage charges by specifying a class-of-service parameter when a mass store volume is written. The parameter allows you to specify one mass store copy instead of the standard two copies. Information about using the class-of-service option is available at:
