Mailing list manager changes

New interface will be more convenient for users

Mailbox

SCD is in the process of converting our managed e-mail lists from an e-mail-based "majordomo" server to a web-based "mailman" server. The new interface should be much more convenient for users and list managers alike.

Note: Static e-mail lists (those which are managed by manually asking the postmaster to make changes) are not changing. Only lists where users can add or remove themselves by e-mail to the majordomo server, or are managed remotely through the majordomo server, are affected by this change.

List managers will be contacted individually to arrange for migrating their lists. List managers who would like to see how the mailman interface works are encouraged to contact postmaster@ucar.edu and request that a test list be set up to experiment with.

Majordomo users who want to see how mailman works can subscribe themselves to the "test" list, and post messages to test@ucar.edu.

One reason NCAR staff should know about this is that there are web pages and other documentation all around the organization that contain instructions on how to subscribe to various lists via majordomo. It is likely not going to be possible to get all these documentation sources corrected before some lists are moved. If those instructions are followed after a list has been moved to mailman, the user will get back an error from majordomo that there is no such list. Once all lists are moved, the majordomo address will respond with information on how to subscribe via mailman, but during the transition period there will likely be some confusion.

Note that the address used for posting to a list will not change when a list is moved. Only the interface used by users to subscribe and unsubscribe, and the interface used by list managers to manage a list, are changing.
