New Class of Service option available for Mass Storage Files

Users can reduce MSS storage charges by foregoing backup copies of files

A data silo in NCAR's Mass Storage System

SCD's Mass Storage System (MSS) group has instituted a new MSS Class of Service (CoS) option that will reduce your MSS storage charges and allow you to better match your MSS file needs with MSS storage charges. The CoS option provides you with alternatives to the present data storage and backup procedures. Currently, whenever you write (or create) an MSS file, two identical copies are written. Now, via the CoS option, you may elect to have just one copy of your data written rather than two. Elimination of a second copy of files will decrease your storage costs starting June 1 2002 (see "Charges for Mass Storage System Use" at http://www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/charges .

Complete documentation on the new CoS option may be found under "msclass" in the Mass Storage System User Guide http://www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/mss/.

Man pages for the CoS option are also available for your reference on most UNIX-based systems.

In addition to being able to specify CoS on new files being created, you can also change the CoS on your existing MSS files. To assist you in this effort, SCD's Mass Storage Group has prepared listings of your MSS holdings in web-based directories on the SCD web site. For information on how to access and use these directories, see http://www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/mss/MSSholdings.html .

We request that you not run jobs with more than 1,000 requests to change file Class of Service, because large requests by multiple users will degrade MSS performance for all users. Instead, we ask you to work with us by returning your edited file lists via email to Ginger Caldwell at cal@ucar.edu .

If you have questions about MSS CoS, please send email to the SCD Consulting Office (consult1@ucar.edu) or call the consultants at 303-497-1278 Monday through Friday, 0800-1700 Mountain Time.
