Lana Soller and Steve Gombosi

Medical emergency responders

As members of UCAR's Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT), Lana Soller, head of SCD's Infrastructure Applications Group, and Steve Gombosi, a consultant in SCD's Technical Consulting Group, were active volunteers during the annual UCAR/NCAR Up the Hill Race on 13 September 2002. Working at a first-aid station halfway up the hill, they gave out drinks of water and offered assistance to bikers, runners, and relay participants.

MERT is a group of employee volunteers from all UCAR sites who receive training in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which enables them to care for an ill or injured person until an ambulance or fire-department squad arrives. All team members are re-certified in basic skills annually. Some members have completed the more advanced First Responder or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) courses.

Lana is MERT leader at the Mesa Lab. For more information on the MERT team, see MERT: UCAR's medical safety net.
