SCD celebrates completion of MALT rewiring project On 2 May 2002, SCD celebrated completion of NCAR's Mesa-Lab Advanced LAN Technology project (MALT). SCD's Network Engineering and Telecommunications Section (NETS) invited everyone involved in the project to a 1950s-style "Malt Shop" party. The party was named for "The MALT Shop," the temporary office space for NCAR staff who had to vacate their offices during retrofitting. NETS manager Marla Meehl said, "For the first time, all offices at the Mesa Lab are wired to the current networking standard." MALT increased network access throughout all Mesa Lab buildings by a factor of 10. It introduced wiring and switching equipment capable of delivering a dedicated 100 Mbps to the desktop and capable of 1 Gbps on the copper cables and 10 Gbps on the fiber-optic cables. But the most critical benefit provided by MALT is a networking infrastructure that will allow network growth of desktop and backbone network connectivity for at least 10 years. In addition to all 20+ members of the NETS staff of network engineers, designers, planners, technicians, and administrators, section manager Marla Meehl congratulated many others for their contribution to the on-schedule, within-budget completion of this vital upgrade: staff members in NCAR Physical Plant Services, Contracts, Shipping and Receiving as well as individuals who served as points of contact in the various NCAR divisions.
