At the request of many staff, and to
show support for the nation and respect for the victims of the recent terrorist
attacks against the U.S., UCAR sites began displaying the American flag at UCAR
on 14 September 2001.
"I wish you all well as we try to cope with this unprecedented situation,"
said UCAR president Rick Anthes.
The UCAR President's Council sent the following message to employees:
We have all watched in horror at the terrorist attacks that have taken place
this week. The losses have been staggering. We have all walked our halls and seen
that some of our own UCAR family have been deeply impacted by these events and
we are flying the American flag in honor and remembrance of those who have lost
their lives. We have even tracked staff traveling around the globe to make sure
they were safe. Luckily, they were.
You may know that President Bush has declared today as a "National Day of Prayer
and Remembrance for the Victims Of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001"
(see http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/20010913-7.html.
He has encouraged us and places of worship to mark this day with noontime memorial
services, the ringing of bells at that hour, and evening candlelight remembrance
vigils. He has encouraged employers to permit their workers time off during the
lunch hour to attend these services.
The President's Council has discussed this and would like to encourage everyone
to participate in this event in whatever manner you believe appropriate. We were
hoping that the UCAR family would together take a moment of silence at noon in
honor of this day and the losses our nation has suffered. If you would like to
take the needed time to attend a noontime service, please do so.
