CRAY J90s (chipeta and ouray) to be decommissioned

Convert Cray binary data now to IEEE format to ease transition to other platforms

CRAY J9

The CRAY J90, ouray

The high-performance production supercomputing environment has evolved over recent years. Parallel vector computers such as the CRAY J90s have been replaced by more cost-effective computers such as the IBM SP, which use clusters of high performance RISC-based Symmetric Multiprocessors. With the acquisition of a new high-performance computer slated for this fall, SCD announces the decommissioning of the CRAY J90s.

SCD will decommission ouray on 30 November 2001. Chipeta will be decommissioned on 31 January 2002. If these dates will significantly impact your scientific progress please let SCD know by emailing Ginger Caldwell (cal@ucar.edu).

SCD also strongly encourages you to convert any Cray binary data (especially COS-blocked binary data) to IEEE format for reading on other platforms. Converting your data now while the CRAY J90s are still available will be easier than converting later when access to Crays is not available. The SCD Consulting Office has successfully assisted many researchers in converting their models to run on other platforms.

If you have questions about converting your code or data, or if you need to put together a migration plan, contact the SCD Consulting Office at consult1@ucar.edu or 303-497-1278.
