Users must recompile applications after May 19 upgrade of blackforest software

Blackforest cluster environment software upgraded

Several components of blackforest's cluster environment software were upgraded to the "Mohonk" release as follows:

  • PSSP was upgraded from 3.1.1 to 3.2
  • GPFS was upgraded from 1.2 to 1.3
  • LoadLeveler was upgraded from 2.1 to 2.2

The base AIX OS level has not changed.

In addition to the above changes, several patches were applied that affect blackforest's compilers and libraries. Because this is a substantial upgrade, blackforest users must recompile their applications after May 19 and check long-running computations for continuity.

Test version of 64-bit MPI library now available

A beta-test version of IBM's 64-bit MPI library was installed, but the 32-bit MPI library will remain the default. If you want to use the 64-bit MPI, the SCD Consulting Office will provide you with the information. The main reason to use 64-bit MPI is to avoid the 256 MB stack memory limitation inherent with the 32-bit memory applications at this time. 64-bit MPI is also available (but is not the default) on babyblue at this time.

If you have questions about the upgrade, or recompiling your applications, or using the 64-bit MPI library, please call SCD Consulting at 303-497-1278 or send email to consult1@ucar.edu.
