SCD supports large and small research investigators, no matter where they are located, by providing powerful, user-centered computing facilities. At the beginning of calendar year 2001, SCD released its FY2000 Annual Scientific Report, which describes accomplishments from the past fiscal year.

During FY2000, SCD has:

  • Overseen major machine upgrades, resulting in a 400% increase in available compute cycles for researchers
  • Provided for new mass storage capabilities
  • Enhanced scientific visualization resources
  • Subcontracted with UCAR to provide for enterprise web services
  • Provided easier access to and management of treasured research datasets

The Annual Scientific Report is available on the web at www.scd.ucar.edu/docs/asr2000/contents.html.

SCD maps the future of computing support for researchers

SCD's researcher-centered focus in FY2000 resulted in the development of forward-looking guidelines for better serving the community.

These guidelines, called roadmaps, outline SCD's most important strategic planning initiatives. Each of the 11 roadmaps was developed using input from many sources, including scientific community needs, NSF review panels, SCD advisory panels, the NCAR Strategic Plan for High-Performance Simulation, market research, technology trends, community efforts, and potential partnerships.

The roadmaps furnish both an overview and an outline of where SCD plans to invest time and resources to advance scientific computing for the atmospheric and related sciences. The roadmaps are on the web at http://www.scd.ucar.edu/dig/atlas.
