At their meeting on 15 November, the UCAR President's Council approved a plan to transfer the telecommunications function from the Information Technology division in UCAR Finance and Administration to SCD's Network Engineering Technology Section (NETS). The plan is based on the fact that the two groups work together and support each other's efforts in engineering and installation projects. It was also noted that data and voice communication technologies are converging and could soon lose their separate identities.

Both groups are funded from the communications indirect cost pool and serve the entire UCAR organization. The merged group is expected to benefit from some efficiencies in operations and planning. However, telecommunications and networking services for UCAR/NCAR will continue to be provided at the present high level.

The transfer was effective 26 November 2000. Questions regarding the transfer can be addressed to Marla Meehl (marla@ucar.edu) or Teresa Shibao (shibao@ucar.edu).
