SCD website adopts UCAR corporate look

New interface improves navigation, usability, visual appeal

The SCD website has been redesigned from the ground up.

SCD's Digital Information Group has developed a new interface that leverages the good-looking graphics and corporate identity of the UCAR scheme to provide better usability for NCAR users.

Crucial to the renovation is the tabbed navigation bar at the top of web pages. This tabbed "navbar" offers improved navigation and a consistent look and feel through the site.

A new hierarchical organization, the result of extensive analysis of existing SCD web pages, makes information easier to find from the SCD home page. The information is targeted and prioritized toward principal users of the website, in the following order: 1) NCAR researchers and programmers who use SCD computing facilities; 2) SCD stakeholders such as funding agencies, corporate officers, committee members, and the general public; and 3) SCD staff.

Part of the makeover is the brand-new SCD News. SCD News offers features and updates on the NCAR computing environment, as well as tips to help NCAR users run their jobs better. SCD News differs from the old SCDzine in that it is not released in several issues per year but is a purebred web publication -- i.e., it is continually updated so that late-breaking information gets to users faster. Older articles are aged off to online archives that are easily accessible.

Each week SCD News features a "photo of the week" highlighting equipment, staff members, or activities in the SCD neighborhood.

Ongoing & etc.

Higher level pages in the SCD website now conform to the new style, but the design will be propagated to lower levels on an ongoing basis.

As with any new release, bugs may be discovered. These we will vigorously remediate.

Your feedback is welcome; please send email to the Digital Information Group. We'd love to hear from you!
