address mask
A bit mask used to select bits from an Internet address for subnet addressing. The mask is 32 bits long and selects the network portion of the Internet address and one or more bits of the local portion. Sometimes called subnet mask.

address resolution
A means for mapping Network Layer addresses (like an IP address of 128.125.1.45) onto media-specific addresses (like an Ethernet address of 8:0:20:9:42:c0). See ARP.

address
A number or name that uniquely identifies a computer in a network. Usually, an address uniquely identifies a specific interface on a computer (some computers have multiple connections to networks). To make addresses easy for humans to use, names are usually assigned to addresses, and network software converts the names to numbers.

ADPCM
Adaptive Differential PCM
