NetBrain (NETS notes)

  1. I (Pete) got a loaner laptop named sweitzer from WSST.
  2. I connected it to the .8. network.
  3. I inserted the NetBrain demo CD.
  4. I clicked "Install NetBrain Workstation". It failed due to privileges.
  5. I logged off and logged in as a privileged user.
  6. I inserted the NetBrain demo CD.
  7. I clicked "Install NetBrain Workstation".
  8. I logged off the privileged account and logged in as "siemsen".
  9. I started NetBrain.
  10. To get at UCAR's config files, I created a shortcut to the SAMBA-served files on netserver, using my Windows notes about sharing files.
  11. I copied config files from netserver:/tftpboot/pancho-configs to a directory inder my home directory folder named "configs".
  12. I deleted the files that don't belong:
    cd ~/configs
    rm -rf CVS
    rm *movaz*
    rm marshallr-confg cgrb-confg cg2-mr-c1-gs-confg gin-confg frgp-as-s-confg (these are out-of-date)
  13. I copied the configs directory to the Windows laptop, onto the Desktop.
  14. In NetBrain, I clicked "Import configuration files..."
  15. I set the workspace to "ucar"
  16. I imported C:\Documents and Settings\siemsen\Desktop\configs
  17. It gave the following error: The number of devices in your network is larger than 50 permitted in the license.
I went back to the "configs" directory on netserver and deleted more files...
    rm *ts*
    rm frgp-gw-3-confg (it's a juniper)
    rm fb-*
    rm jef-*
  18. I tried importing again, and got an error that suggested that NetBrain requires that config files have names that end in ".config". I renamed all the files to change "-confg" to ".config".
  19. It gave the following error: C:\Program Files\NetBrain\Workstation\UserData\Baseline\100000000011ec\ConfigFile\cg1-0103-c1-gs(128.117.4.130).config was not found.
  20. After some struggling, I got WSST to lag in as administrator and set the protection on the C:\Program Files\NetBrain directory such that "siemsen" has access.
  21. I did "Build".
  22. Telnet/SSH access won't work for most of our devices, but it works for l3-gw-1 and frgp-gw-2.
  23. To tell NetBrain the SNMP communities, I did "Tune Live Access" and "Network Settings", under the "SNMP Community" tab, entered the three community strings that we use for read-only access. I clicked "Start Tuning". NetBrain opened a "Tune Live Access" window that showed progress as it tried to access all the devices. SNMP access worked for our CATOS devices, but not our IOS devices, because we have a filter in our IOS devices that blocks access.
ACTION ITEM: Wait for DSG to make sweitzer's IP address static.
ACTION ITEM: Add sweitzer's new IP address to access lists 95.txt and 96.txt, and then run config-checker.pl, and then update the access lists in the devices.
  24. With SNMP access enabled for all devices, try Layer 2 discovery.
