On December 19, FRGP engineers participated in a conference call for TransitRail members. Among other things, we learned that TransitRail engineers have enabled a new service for TransitRail members. Looking glass websites are now available that allow anyone to execute "show" commands on TransitRail routers. You can use the looking glasses to verify that TransitRail is receiving your route(s) from the FRGP. We think that the FRGP advertises your routes to TransitRail correctly, and we think TransitRail accepts your routes. The looking glasses let you verify it.
To verify that TransitRail accepts your routes, web to http://lg.pch.net/. Select the "show ip bgp <prefix> [netmask]" radio button. Type your IP route prefix into the "Arguments" field. Select a TransitRail router from the "Router" list on the right. These are the TransitRail routers in the list today:
Click "Submit". You should see output that contains an AS path starting with "11164 14041", which are the AS numbers of TransitRail and the FRGP, respectively. If you don't see such an AS path, there may be problem, and you should report it to frgp-eng@ucar.edu.
You may be wondering why Ashburn appears in the above list and Chicago doesn't. The FRGP connects to TransitRail in Seattle, Los Angeles and Chicago. Their Chicago router doesn't have a looking glass interface. We don't have a connection to Ashburn, but it's a TransitRail site so it shares routes with the other TransitRail sites.
You don't have to remember all this - you can find this information on the FRGP website under "Tools".
