Hummingbird Exceed X-Window client software on a PC
Installing the Exceed X-Window client
- Prepare for the install
- Get the user's network password. You'll need it because
the install requires a reboot.
- If it's an NT system, get the administrator password.
You'll need it because you have to be the administrator to
install the software.
- Get a license for Exceed from Jim Van Dyke. These come on
small square pieces of paper.
- If it's an NT system, log in as administrator
- Get the Installation media ready
- If installing from the network
- Get physically connected to the network
- Click on Network Neighborhood
- Click on Abyss (Jim Van Dyke's machine)
- Click on SOFTWARE
- Click on Hummingbird
- Click on Exceed
- Click on Msetup.exe. If you get a
messages that the file couldn't be found, click down
into the subdirectories to Setup.exe.
The path is >Abyss->SOFTWARE->Hummingbird->Exceed->Exceed->Nt_intel->Software->Setup.exe.
- If installing from a CD-ROM
- Insert the CD-ROM into the drive
- The system should automatically start the installation
process
At this point, the screen should show the main Hummingbird
installation screen, which says Hummingbird
Multiplatform and offers a short menu of options.
- Click on Install Microsoft Java VM
- Click Yes
- Click Yes for the license window.
- (flying papers)
- Click OK to acknowledge that it's complete
- Click Yes to restart the computer
- Click on Install Exceed
- Click on Next> to acknowledge the
Welcome message
- Click on Yes, I agree to acknowledge the
License Agreement
- Click on Next> to accept the Typical
installation
- If you're on NT, it'll ask you if you want all users of
this machine to be able to use the Exceed software.
Click on Yes, then click on
Next>.
- Click on Next> to accept the default home
directory for the Exceed software
- Click on Next> to accept the default user
directory
- Click on Finish to accept the summary of
your selections
- At this point, it may tell you that you should have the
Java Virtual Machine installed. You should have done this
as specified earlier in this installation procedure. If
you didn't, exit now, do it, and continue from this point.
- Enter the 7-digit serial number in the Serial
Number field. This number is on the small square
slip of paper that you got from Jim.
- Enter 90690-000 in the Site
License field.
- Enter Belinda Housewright in the Site
Contact field.
- Click Next> to exit the license window.
- Click Yes to indicate that the license
information is correct.
- Click Register Later because Belinda has
already registered NCAR as a user of the product.
- Click Finished
- Click Next> to accept the default
keyboard type.
- Click Next> to use no password for
XConfig.
- Click No to verify that you don't want
to use a password for XConfig.
- Click Next> to accept Yes as the
answer to the question about whether you want to create a
shortcut.
- Click Next> to accept Yes as the
answer to the question about whether you want to tune the
X server.
- Click OK to verify that the installation
is complete.
- Click Yes to restart the computer.
Using the Exceed X-Window client
To create a shortcut for opening an xterm on niwot...
(logged in as a user, not as administrator)
- Open the Exceed folder
- Click on Exceed. A banner window will appear
for a moment, then disappear. This means the X server is now
running on your PC.
- Click on Client Wizard.
- Click on Next> to acknowledge the
Welcome window.
- Enter niwot.ucar.edu in the Host
field.
- Enter SUN in the Host Type field.
- Click Next>.
- Click on Next> to accept XTerm as
the application.
- Enter your username in the Username field. Use
the name of your account on the niwot machine.
- Enter your password in the Password field. Use
the password for your account on the niwot machine.
- Click Next>
- Click Next> to accept the default description
and create a shortcut.
- Click Finish< to exit the Client Wizard.
