Using partitionMagic to partition a disk
- Get PartitionMagic
PartitionMagic is a product, do you
have to buy it. I got a copy of PartitionMagic 5.01 on two
floppies.
-
Defragment your Windows hard drive
- Insert floppy 1 into the diskette drive, and boot off it.
When is asks, insert floppy 2. PartitionMagic will start up,
and show you what you have for partitions. You probably have
one partition, named "NO NAME".
- You'll want to reduce the size of the existing disk
partition. This will create unused space following the first
partition. Then you can create a new partition in the unused
space. Click Operations->Resize / Move...
- On 10/07/00, when repartitioning the 18Gig disk on my Dell
CPxJ laptop to make room to install Linux, I chose to make the
first (Windows) partition 4502.6MB and the second (Linux)
partition 12794.0MB. I clicked OK.
- With the first partition selected, I clicked
Operations->Label... and labeled it
W2000.
- With the second partition selected, I clicked
Operations->Create.... In the resulting window, I
set the Create as: field to Primary
Partition. I set the Partition Type: field to
Linux Ext2. I set the Label field to
LINUX. I clicked OK.
- I clicked Apply and then OK.
PartitionMagic worked for about 30 minutes, showing it's
progress. then it says you have to reboot. Eject the floppy
and click OK.
