Supervisor Engine Redundancy

On 2004-10-25, NETS upgraded the ml-mr-c1-gs and ml-mr-c2-gs switches from Sup IIs with MSFC2s to Sup 720s with MSFC3s. So in ml-mr-c1-gs, instead of mlra and mlrb, there is now only mlra. On each VLAN in mlra, the router has it's real address (usually at .253) and it's HSRP address (usually at .251). We could've replaced the real addresses with the HSRP addresses, but then we'd just have to change them back when we activate redundant routers in a second chassis. This leaves us in a good position to (for example) simply configure the MSFC3's in ml-mr-c2-gs with the mlrb configuration and have our two-chassis router redundancy.

For redundancy, the two old MSFC2s in each switch used HSRP. The new MSFC3s use "Supervisor Engine Redundancy" instead of HSRP to handle redundancy. Here is a link to the Cisco's "Configuring Redundancy" webpage, which describes how SER works.
