Pecovered Port Recovery Procedure
In response to the problem of "recovered port recovery" and from
our infrastructure meetings, here is the procedure we discussed:
- Note: A network port is eligible to be recovered if listed in the Excessively Unused Catalyst Ethernet Switch Port Lists, and "Days Inactive" field is 200 days or greater. Good general practice is to search for "3B" ports, thus not taking the only service from a T.O. Additionally, take note of active vlan and office number for conference rooms, common areas, and special requested networks.
- Identify the proposed port on ethernet switch and verify the port to be "notconnect" using the show port [mod/port] command.
- Verify the port has not been modified recently by reference to the
"Last-Time-Cleared" field using the show port [mod/port] or
show counters [mod/port] commands. (A recently modified port may indicate
someone has already recovered the port after the most recent run of port
lists).
- Once a port has been determined as recoverable:
- Make appropriate configuration changes.
- Clear port counters using clear counters [mod/port] command. When prompted
to continue, acknowledge with yes.
- Remove old patch cable and/or labels depending on rerouting cable vs. installing new.
- Create install new cable label where applicable.
- Submit Network Change Control complete with new configuration description and physical label information.
- If multiple ports are being recovered or under special circumstances, email
to: ne@ucar.edu to initiate a special run
on the port list.
