MSFC console ports - how to use them

Hey NE,

I learned something about console access. To access the MSFC router console port, you issue a switch console command from the supervisor console. Normally the backup supervisor console port is completely disabled, but after issuing a switch console <module #> (where module # is 15 or 16 for the MSFC in slot 1 or 2), the supervisor physically containing the appropriate module has its port connected to the MSFC, even if its the inactive supervisor. This can be confusing when the active supervisor doesn't contain the MSFC you need to work on. In this case, after issuing the switch console command, you need to physically move your serial connection to the other supervisor to access the MSFC therein. Use ^c^c^c to return the console to the supervisor card.
