CISL Discoveries

For FY2006, CISL is pleased to announce one discovery: demonstration that components of the Community Climate System Model (CCSM) can be modified to take advantage of literally tens of thousands of processors on two different kinds of parallel microprocessor-based supercomputing systems. This is two orders of magnitude more processors than are currently utilized by these components. Another valuable aspect of this discovery is that the rate at which the model integrates is twice as fast as that demonstrated by the Earth Simulator in Japan. Until now, CCSM software has not been demonstrated to scale successfully on parallel microprocessor systems. This breakthrough indicates that the CCSM will be able to make efficient use of the coming generation of petascale computing systems. When applied to all CCSM components, this new method will significantly decrease the amount of time needed to complete a simulation, and it can also increase the resolution at which the software runs. Please read the following report for details.
