Theme-of-the-Year 2006: Emerging Mathematical Strategies for Multi-Scale and Stochastic Modeling of the Atmosphere and Climate

The Theme-of-the-Year (TOY) 2006 will be led by Andrew Majda (Courant Institute, NYU), IMAGe codirector, and Joseph Tribbia (NCAR), and will consist of a series of three focused workshops on representing geophysical processes at resolved and unresolved scales. Each workshop will involve approximately 40 students, and young scientists and senior researchers and will contain a tutorial component along with ample time for spontaneous discussion and questions.

This TOY will identify new strategies based on empirical and stochastic elements for adequately representing subgrid-scale processes in the atmosphere. Another goal is to expose graduate students in applied mathematics and statistics to the scientific issues and principles in modeling the atmosphere.
