Theme-of-the-Year 2005: Data Assimiliation for Geophysical SystemsThis first thematic program was in partnership with the Statistics and Applied Mathematics Sciences Institute (SAMSI) and the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM). Both SAMSI and IPAM are large mathematics centers funded by the NSF, and they pursue a broad spectrum of workshops and conferences on applied mathematics. A workshop was held at each location along with a semester-long program at SAMSI. These were attended by IMAGe visitors and post docs. The three primary conferences held in FY2005 were:
IMAGe contributed to this general program on data assimilation (DA) with a more deliberate focus on the unique problems for DA in the geosciences. The workshop Fusing Geophysical Models with Data hosted by IMAGe was also a tutorial for students and faculty to work with software (DART) that is extensible to the large models that are the norm in geophysical research. The integration of general morning lectures with hands-on computer laboratory experience proved to be an effective format and received very positive reviews by the participants. |
