Numerical methods: Future applications of Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) to modeling

In the coming year, our radial basis functions (RBF) research will focus on the following areas:

1. Modeling the full shallow water wave equations on a sphere using an RBF discretization scheme free of any grid or coordinate-based reference system.

2. Development and implementation of fast algorithms for large climatological data sets from scattered stations.

3. Preparing an introduction to RBFs for SIAM Review. None currently exists in the literature.

4. Investigating the possible applications of RBFs to image processing.
