Wintertime Polar Vortex

The Wintertime Polar Vortex is an upper-atmospheric phenomenon that occurs high in the stratosphere over the northern and southern poles during the wintertime months. In the center of the vortex is a region of low pressure that is unfavorable to Ozone. Hence there is a strong correlation between polar vortex activity and the Ozone hole. The image above depicts a simulation of the polar vortex that was computed at Los Alamos National Lab.
