Data Backup and RecoveryWindows ClientsThe individual files and folders you save on your system are backed up overnight. Should you accidentally delete a file, DSG can recover it for you, depending on the time of deletion. All files saved to the network are backed up on a two week incremental backup basis. After two weeks, those incremental backups are transferred to a "full" backup tape and held for an additional week for a total retention time of 3 weeks. Meanwhile, the two week cycle restarts, overwriting the incremental tapes with newer incremental backups. All retention times are subject to change. Please make sure you check the latest version of this document on DSG website for the most recent information. Despite the backup procedures that DSG has in place, please always use caution when you choose to delete a file or folder. If your system is not being backed up and want it to be submit a work request to DSG. Sun Solaris and Linux ClientsThere are no backups run on Sun Solaris or Linux clients. Space is provided on fileserver, which are NFS-mounted to Sun and Linux workstations. All files and directories written to fileserver are incrementally backed up every night. A full backup is run once a week. In case of a disk failure, the entire operating system will be re-installed using the DSG server running Sun's Jumpstart or Linux install software. These are a stock configurations. Any modifications done to the system by a user are the responsibility of the user. Apple ClientsA full backup is run once a week on Apple systems running Macintosh. The backup is keep online for a week until the next backup is run. Users running Apple are encouraged to keep files and other information of fileserver where incremental and full backups are run. |
