Purpose

I attended the Oracle conference to learn more about Oracle technology.

Overview

Oracle Open World is Oracle's premier annual conference that provides technical sessions, keynote speakers, opportunities to talk to Oracle experts, view demos, view a variety of vendor exhibits, and network with more than 40 thousand people. The conference was well organized. I would have liked more technical sessions as an option to keynote speakers in
the mornings.

Reference Materials / Recommendations

Oracle continues to enrich features in their products. In Oracle 11g there is enhancement for partitioning including interval, composite, and REF partitioning.

Partitions may be created automatically and indexes managed. The import/export utilities are being replaced by the much richer "data pump" utilities.

Oracle is pushing SOA (service oriented architecture) using modular services based on open standards to deploy on the internet. An SOA demo showed a rich dashboard using AJAX technology and Oracle's Business Process Language. The Oracle Business Intelligence tools include data integration from various sources, dashboards, reporting, alerts and workflows, real time decisions. Reports can be published to the dashboard using BI Publisher. The demo using Oracle Application Express (previously HTMLDB) showed getting data into a report on the fly asynchronously using javascript and AJAX"type ahead" technology. There are links to examples using AJAX with "HTMLDB_Get: at http://blogs.oracle.com. (Search for Carl Backstrom.) Tips are available at "www.oraclealchemist.com".

There is a push for Oracle customers to run their Oracle software on Linux.
Oracle has agreed to fix Linux bugs and share the info with RedHat. Larry
Ellison made the announcement and appeared on stage with several live penguins.

City / Accommodation Comments

The Galleria Park hotel was about a mile from Moscone Center so I was able to walk to and from the conference. Accommodations were fine and employees helpful.
